Well, let me see...drums and sailboats both:

Have to work for a living.
They can't just hang around and look pretty.

They each have a vessel or a shell and a taut membrane that is central to their purpose.

They are both vehicles for transportation; one in the outer world and one in the inner world.

They are carriers of the soul.

They are both mysteriously evocative...

On a sailboat I have felt that I am in the hands of God.
When making or playing a drum I often feel that God has gotten into my hands.

And yeah, that's me (when I was young and full of beans) at the helm.
